Competition Notes 2002 |
|
| (all scores mentioned are Net unless otherwise stated). | |
| 15th December | December Medal The final medal of the year and surprisingly the full 18 holes were playable. The festive revelries had no effect on Eillen Gillespie who took the Silver by being the only person who had a score in the 70's. Runner up was Coleen Derighetti, the only other Silver player who didn't NR. Violet Paterson won the Bronze by way of the Best Inward Half from Jaci Moriarty who was left to rue several missed putts. It didn't matter that scores were high today, it was just good to get a full round in and look back on another enjoyable year a Lochend, have a Merry Christmas and see you all in the New Year !! |
| 23rd November | November Medal Another mud bath over 9 holes, the course having took on some new water hazards. Jaci Moriarty is finishing the year with a flourish. Making it two wins in a row, taking the Bronze medal with a 37.5 from Linda Hutchison who carded a 39. Joan Gray took the Silver with a 40 and Coleen Derighetti was runner-up with 43. |
| 10th November | Winter Trophy Reduced to a 9-hole competition the Winter Trophy took place in what could described as a bit of a mud batch. However Jaci Moriarty made light of the conditions and won her first singles competition of the year (better late than never!!). Eunice Reid was runner up with a 42, bih from Nicola Moriarty who came to grief at the 18th (now where have I heard that before!). |
| 20th October | Centenary Competition What a crazy game this golf lark is, for instance take Coleen Derighetti, enjoying a fine October. There she was standing on the 18th tee, needing a 5 to finish with a 67 then her concentration moves from golf to "Golf Idols the Rivals",,,que the music,,,"The Long And Winding Drive" ended up under a tree (penalty drop!) followed by a duff in "The Thick Green Grass Of Rough" then another penalty. No need for a "Bridge Over Casual Water", just something to wipe away the tears on the realisation that Gareth Gate's "Stupid Mistake" was running true and handicap wasn't gonna be cut to "N-n-n-nineteen". The 10 at the 18th meant a final score of 72 with the whole field still to finish. But hey its never over till its over and the fat lady almost sung but the scores that followed were making the 72 look better by the minute, despite a final flourish by Jaci Moriarty who won the Bronze with a 73, followed by new member Val Smith (75), yours truly won the Centenary Rose Bowl with that 72 so no more thoughts of "Tragedy" Joyce Anderson is back in the prizes, winning the Silver with a 75 followed by Pat Meikle (78). And then the customary meal afterwards was enjoyed by all, special thanks to Colin Marshall and his wife who arranged this at short notice due to the caterers being on holiday. So who'd have thought I'd be singing about notching up a damn 10 but as the man says "It could happen to anyone of us,,la,la,la,la,la " |
| 7th October | Fay Allanach Competition Diane Moncrieff is still on the winning form, taking the Fay Allanach competition with a 70, last year's winner Jaci Moriarty put up a fine defense to be runner-up with a 71. The CSS was 71 which means Diane shaves another 0.4 off her handicap. |
| 29th September | Singles and Foursomes Summer Matchplay Finals The Foursomes final tee'd off in the early morning dew (allowing us to watch Europe's wonderful Ryder Cup victory later in the day). Club Champion Linda Bain and partner Coleen Derighetti may have been, in some folks eyes, pre match favourites, but as you all know there is really no such thing in a Handicap matchplay competition. Never more than one hole in it, Sandra Craig and Nicola Moriarty kept up the pressure, using their strokes well, especially at the long holes around the turn, the tie was all square after 16. The first bad hole of the day (17th) from Sandra and Nicola opened the door for Linda and Coleen to have the advantage going up the 18th where Linda showed why she is club champion by hitting the shot of the day, a superb wood to the edge of the 18th green got them there in 2, on such shots ties are decided and so it proved, as a four was enough to half the hole and win the trophy. So the sequence continues (see 10th September) and who would bet against double winning Linda continuing the sequence next year, whoever she partners. Yet another 18th hole decider later in the day as Pat Meikle and Joan Gray contested the Summer Matchplay Singles Final. A see-saw battle as Pat let a 2 hole lead slip and Joan was one up after 16. Maybe it was determination to shed the "bridesmaid" tag that spurred Pat on as she proceeded to square the match at the 17th then a fine 2nd shot all but reached the 18th green and a four was enough to give Pat the that winning feeling. (nice isn't it!!) |
| 24th September | Flag Competition The final Tuesday night get-together of the year (where has the season gone?) and Diane Moncrieff came back from a poor start to her round to stretch her par-plus-handicap well up the 10th fairway (two good shots up the 10th). Linda Hutchinson run her a close second and also managed to go up the 10th. |
| 21st September | September Medal Linda Bain and Linda Hutchinson scooped the September Medals in a surprisingly high Scoring competition. Linda Bain's 72 was just enough to give her the Silver Medal from the runner-up Pat Meikle who scored 73 to continue her year of second places, maybe Pat will go one better in the Summer Matchplay final. Linda Hutchinson's 74 won the Bronze by a 6 stroke margin from Ruby Curran who scored 80. CSS was 70. Fancy winning the competition and still going up 0.1. |
| 14th September | Betty Noble Trophy Joan Gray, runner-up in this competition last year, went one better with a 6 stroke victory in this years Betty Noble Competition. Her fine 65 well and trully secures her Silver Division status as it now cuts her to 19. Coleen Derighetti was runner-up with a 74, best inward half from Jaci Moriarty and Pat Meikle. CSS was 71. |
| 10th September | Summer Foursomes semi-final The double is still on for Club Champion Linda Bain as she and partner Coleen Derighetti won through to the final of the handicapped foursomes, proving too strong for Jaci Moriarty and Myra Butler. For those of you who believe in fate, or just like spooky coincidences, how about this. Since the new trophy was bought in 1999 the run has went - 1999 won by Wendy Gould and Eileen Gillespie who won it again in 2000 with Jaci Moriarty who won it again in 2001 with Coleen Derighetti who will break the sequence this year if she doesn't win it with Linda Bain, I'm sure the other finalists, be it Nicola Moriarty/Sandra Craig or Margaret Richards/Anne McLennan will be hoping that little run comes to an end. |
| Summer Matchplay Semi Final Joan Gray reached yet another final by overcoming last year's winner, Linda Bain, in the semifinal of the handicap competition at the 16th hole. The final promises to be a close one with both Joan and Pat enjoying a good run of form and they both play off the same handicap so they'll be playing scratch. draw in full |
|
| 5th September | Summer Matchplay Semi Final Pat Meikle won the first semifinal yesterday against Margaret Richards. Although both players started off well, Pat managed to capitalise on the greens and was 3-up after 9, Margaret was unable to make her strokes count around turn (sharing the 10th to 13th) then Pat moved in with a decisive win at the 14th and match-winning pitch to 4" on the 15th to secure her place in the final. So Pat, who this year appear to always be there or there about in most of the competitions, will face either Joan Gray, or newly crowned club champion Linda Bain against whom she faired pretty well in the Championship semifinal |
| 27th August | 2-club and putter (Tuesday Girls) A great turn out for this competition. A new trophy "The Tuesday Girls", donated by Jessie Grahame, was played for over 9 holes (although some of us were having so much fun we continued on a few holes). Ruby Curran will be the first name on the trophy, her winning score of 34 just pipped Margaret Richards and Pat Meikle who both scored 35. Many thanks to Jessie for also donating a nice buffet, went down a treat. |
| 24th August | August Medal Summer weather today (hurraah !) but surprisingly only one score under 70. That belonged to Patsy White who won the Bronze with a fantastic 65, cutting her handicap in the process. Diane Moncrieff was runner up with 71, this together with her Bronze Championship and Robert Binnie wins makes it a very successful month for our newest member. Eileen Gillespie, who will soon be sailing away for two months, wins the Silver with a 76, a nice way to prematurely end her season. winning on the bih from Coleen Derighetti who's umpteen lipped putts were to prove costly. And now the bad news, it was a counter with a CSS of 71, meaning an increase of handicap for yours trully at the end of the month. |
| Summer Foursomes The final place in the semi-final was decided last night at the 19th hole as Linda Bain and Coleen Derighetti came back from 3-down to scrape through against the two Pat's (Meikle and Hill) who played very steady after a bit of a nightmare start. And what was I saying about we all do daft things, yours truly only tee'd off from from the wrong place at the 4th (I know don't ask!) giving away the hole which almost became very costly indeed. Other comedy moments included Linda's trick shot at the 7th which bounced back from a garden shed into play only for her partner to lose it on the next shot via a tree and Pat Hill's spectacular drive at the 17th which ended up back on the 16th fairway (almost taking out her playing partners in the process). Every one a gem! |
|
| Summer Matchplay The semi final line-up is now complete after Pat Meikle won the replayed match with Eunice Reid and Joan Gray won her tie against Kath Leith. Pat takes on Margaret Richards and Joan will play defending champion Linda Bain for a place in the final. |

| 4th August |
Club Mixed Foursomes |
| 27th July | June Medal Scores were high today (nothing to with yesterday's over indulgence I'll bet). New member Nicola Moriarty scored the best round of the day with a 72, unfortunately her handicap is still too high for her to be eligible for a LGU medal but I'm sure that won't be for long. Official winner of the Bronze was Diane Moncrieff with a 76 and Eileen Gillespie took the Silver medal with a 72, runner up was Myra Law with a 74 (bih from Sandra Craig). |
| 26th July | Day Trip - Sconie Golf Club (via Lundin Links) On the road at seven in the morning, we traveled over the Forth to Sconie in Fife. First mix-up of the day was unpacking the bags and clubs at nearby "Lundin Links" whoops ! After re-packing (in record quick time!) we got to "Sconie" in plenty time for the breakfast before setting off on the Strokeplay competition which brought in some good scores best of which came from Pat Meikle who scored a 67, luckily the weather held out for the second round Stableford when hip flasks and revelry was the order of the day, the good golf came from Nicola Moriarty who won with 42 points. The fairly gentle "Sconie" course proved to be a good choice for the outing and compliments to the caterers and bar staff who looked after us very well.. Thanks also to Pat Meikle who introduced us to the delights of a "Singing Kettle" song that I'm still singing (much to the delight of my workmates!). McDonalds,,,McDonalds,,AAAAARRRGHH!! |
| Summer Matchplay Quarter Final Yet another tie going all the way and then some. One up after 17 holes, Eunice Reid laid up with her forth shot at the 18th but Pat Meikle one-putted for her four and tied the match. Due to the bad weather and a queue at the first hole they decided a replay was in order and will fight it out again next week. draw in full |
|
| 16th July | Summer Matchplay Quarter Final Another 18 hole thriller as defending champion Linda Bain makes the extra stroke count in her win over Joyce Anderson. Linda will meet Joan Gray or Kath Leith in the Semi-Final. draw in full |
| 13th July | Captain's Day Competition Summer has officially started (better late than never I hear you say!). Glorious sunshine graced the Captain's Day and Margaret Richards took full advantage with a handicap-cutting 67, Margaret now plays off 24 well done!. Coleen Derighetti at last plays a decent round (horaaah!!) with a 70 to take second place (that was despite doing her best to blow it with some wild driving!). Myra Law was 3rd with a 71, bih from Jessie Graham, Jaci Moriarty and Pat Meikle who herself had very hard lines by carding an 8 at the final hole due to a wayward drive. Afterwards the customary cheese and wine went down a treat. |
| Summer Matchplay Quarter Final Margaret Richards is the first to make it into the Semi-finals following her win over Jaci Moriarty at the 18th hole. She will play either Eunice Reid or Pat Meikle in the Semi. draw in full |
|
| 29th June | June Medal (Championship Qualifier) Despite the wild weather there was a Silver lining for Joan Gray and Pat Meikle who both cut their handicap to move into the Silver section. Pat scored a 68 and Joan won the Bronze medal with a 66, keeping up the sequence of the Bronze championship winners who move into the Silver within the year. Linda Bain won the Silver Medal with a 73 making her the top qualifier for the Club Championship in August. Eileen Gillespie was runner up with a 76. The CSS was 70 so there are a few 0.1 increases. Reigning Club Champion Joyce Anderson couldn't play today but can breath easy that her May medal score of 97 was enough to ensure her place in the Championship although as the 7th best score she will start her defence of the title with a tough match against Myra Law who took her so close in last years semi-final. In a sporting gesture Pat Meikle has agreed to take her place in the Club Championship and given up her place in the Bronze Championship. Full Championship draw. |
| 26th June | Summer Matchplay 2nd Round Pat Meikle became the 8th quarter finalist after last nights win over Audrey Sinton. She now plays Eunice Reid who knocked out Eileen Gillespie. The quarter final line-up throws up four cracking ties. Details. |
| 8th June |
Linda Dewar Trophy Eileen Gillespie took the Linda Dewar trophy with a steady 72, thanks to a fine outward scratch 40. Margaret Richards and Joan Gray were the runners up with 74 (Margaret taking it on the BIH). The CSS calculated at 71. |
| 25th May |
May Medal New member Diane Moncreiff wins her first Lochend competition. A 72 gave her the Bronze medal from Pat Meikle, runner up with 74. In the Silver section the wild and windy conditions didn't stop Kath Leith who won with a 71 followed by Myra Law who took the runner-up spot with 73 (bih from Coleen Derighetti). |
|
Summer Matchplay 2nd Round Joyce Anderson marches into the quarter final, after a first round win over Violet Paterson and a second round victory over Jessie Graham (and all her strokes!) |
|
| 11th May |
Coronation Foursomes Jaci Moriarty and Coleen Derighetti won today and, depending on the results from other clubs will represent Lochend at Alloa next month. Linda Hutchinson and Jessie Graham were the runners up. |
|
Summer Matchplay 2nd Round Jaci Moriarty wasted no time in becoming the first competitor through to the quarter-finals. Following her first round success against against Myra Butler she was up against Coleen Derighetti. All square after eight holes, Jaci proceeded to win the next five holes with a superb inward half ensuring there was no way back for last year's runner up. |
|
| 27th April |
April Medal Fresh back from holiday Eileen Gillespie won the Silver medal with a 70 and Linda Hutchinson was the Bronze medal winner with a 71. The CSS calculated at 70 meaning there were a few 0.1 increases just in time for the monthly review, Pat Meikle and Violet Paterson both drop to the bronze division. Come on girls we need more Silver players !! |
| 13th April |
April Stableford And we're off... With January and February medals canceled due to the weather it was nice to have glorious spring weather for the April Stableford. Anne McLennan scored 34 points with new member Diane Moncrieff taking the runner up spot on the inward half from Coleen Derighetti both scoring 32. No increase in handicaps as Anne was the only one to score 34 or better and isn't in category 1-4. |
