All roads led to Lochend on Sunday as the 2002 Ladies Open got under
way at 9am sharp.
More than 80 ladies fought it out on what proved to be tough conditions
as the constant rain leading up to the day left us with thick greens
and no run on the fairways. Thankfully the weather was fine during the
competition but scores were still high (in some cases net 78 and 79
were in the prizes!). However conditions proved perfect for Swanston's
Maureen MacKay who was the overall winner with a fine 67 (the only score
under 70). Maureen received the trophy and £50 golf vouchers.
Pat Meikle followed up her Gogarburn and Grangemouth success by taking
the best Lochend Lady with a 74. Other Lochend winners included Joan
Gray who took the Bronze Scratch (74) along with the Longest Drive at
the 11th. Eileen Gillespie was nearest the pin at the 17th and also
the 2nd Silver Scratch (88) with Evelyn McCowan taking the 1st Silver
Scratch with a fine 82. Jaci Moriarty was 5th Bronze Handicap (76) and
Thelma Dey was 2nd Bronze Scratch (98 bih). Joyce Anderson and Linda
Bain were 2nd/3rd Silver Handicap (78 and 79 respectively). And our
senior ladies got in on the act as Jessie Grahame took the Vet's prize
(78) on the better inward half and Captain Pat Hill also took the hidden
hole (well its still a prize isn't it!).
Evelyn McCowan was also the only person to score a two and kindly donated
the winning pot to Cancer Research in memory of Stella Dickson.
And so the prizewinners have the enviable decisions to make such as
what to spend the golf vouchers on, what stage show to use the theatre
tickets on, what to fill up the nice new hip-flask with or even what
hair-do to get with the "Medusa" vouchers well done to you
all. To the rest of us I say thank goodness for the reduction-only rule.
See you all again next year.
