Lochend Ladies Open 2003

16th June "This Ladies Open is just two good !!!"
Yes it was Ladies Open time again with lovely sunshine and fine golfing conditions. Even the threatened traffic chaos, due to the Edinburgh Marathon, failed to make any impact on the big day, thanks to the sterling efforts of the committee who informed everyone of suggested detours to the course.
On the field it was the early birds who set the pace.  Straight from the first tee-off time it was evident scores were going to be low when Jaci Moriarty posted a 67 then was promptly ousted from the top of the leaderboard ten minutes later by, former Lochend member, Doreen Martin who also posted an early 67 and took the lead by the best inward half. Coleen Derighetti then came in with a 69 her best score of the year, good enough for the Best Silver Handicap and a two at the 15th proved to be profitable for yours truly, increasing her winnings by a further £75, all that in the first four tee-times.
More sub 70 rounds came in throughout the day and home players were still getting in on the act.  Sandra Craig took the 1st Bronze Scratch with a 90 (net 69), another 67 was posted by Margaret Richards who took the Best Lochend Lady (along with the nearest the pin in two at the 8th). which meant Jaci's 67 won her the 1st Bronze Handicap and another cut in handicap (CSS came out at 70). Val Smith played a blinder until she came to grief at the 18th, however her 70 was still good enough to bag the 4th Bronze handicap.  The Silver Scratch prize has practically belonged to Evelyn McCowan in recent years and this time she still scored the best scratch score of the day (80) but was pipped on the best inward half by D. Wilson from Harburn, so Evelyn takes the 2nd Silver Scratch and is still a golfing god.  Linda Bain secured the Silver Longest Drive at the 11th!
There was the hard luck stories such as Val Smith's collapse at the 18th. Joyce Anderson's 73 was only out of the prizes on the bih, and her scratch 84 was the next best after Evelyn McCowan.  Myra Butler was another who just missed out on the prizes by the bih. Pat Meikle also came so close to securing the nearest the pin at the 15th, it was actually nearer than the winner but was an inch or so off the green. No matter how they faired it was a tribute to the club that so many members stayed on for the prizegiving and exchanged their stories over a few refreshments. well done to you all!
And so Doreen Martin (now of Royal Musselburgh) topped the leaderboard for almost the whole day, her 67 (bih) gave her the overall winner's prize ( and thankfully she made it back to receive her winnings and the trophy.
Like Doreen most visitors had nothing but praise for the event and the prizes. My own colleagues from work were delighted with the raffle prizes and sweep money they won and assure me they'll be back next year!
