Lochend Ladies Open 2005
| 13th June | Eileen Gillespie leads the way as Lochend Ladies sweep the board |
| The
2005 Open really did belong to the Lochend Ladies as the home players excelled
themselves on the big day. The icing on the cake was supplied by Eileen Gillespie,
a previous winner of this event in 1998, who not only shot the best scratch score
today (78, her best ever) she won the event for a second time with a nett 67. Early on it looked like it may be last year's winner, Louise Angus (Swanston), who would be the first person ever to win a second Lochend Open. Her fine 68 held the overall lead until Eileen came in. However Louise did take the Best Bronze handicap prize and still loves this competition. Former Lochend member, and previous winner of this event, Suzanne Ireland was another big winner today. Her birdie at the 15th was the only two today so Suzanne scooped the £60 sweep money, her tee-shot at the 15th also stood as the nearest the pin (for which she got a bottle of vodka and a brolley). And Suzanne also scooped another £50 for winning the Silver Scratch prize with an 81 on the bih from Lochend's Evelyn McCowan who took £30 for the second Silver Scratch. Liberton's Evelyn Hogg was well in the hunt for a special score after 17 holes then she finished with a 10. Her round of 70 still gave her 4th Bronze Handicap and she also won our first ever Par Three Competition (best nett score over the three short holes). We may have had more visitors than previous years but today was all about the excellent showing of the home ladies. Diane Moncrieff and Violet Paterson were both only one stroke off the pace. Diane takes the Best Lochend Lady (on the bih) to go with her ever increasing list of successes, Violet took the Bronze Scratch Prize with her 90. Pat Meikle and Jaci Moriarty both carded 69 which gave them 3rd and 4th Bronze Handicap respectively. Joan Gray won her second scratch prize of the week, a 2nd Bronze Scratch prize at Prestonfield on Tuesday was followed by the same prize today. Eunice Reid's 71 was good enough for a 4th Bronze Handicap to go with the nearest the pin in two at the 11th and even the mystery hole (chosen by Eric the Caterer) went Lochend's way as Pat Hill had the highest score at the 12th. As ever the feedback from the visitors was very complimentary on the course, catering, prizes and overall organization (the amount of raffles prizes was phenomenal, many thanks to all the Lochend Ladies for their contributions). Visitors from Newbattle and from my Office making their first time entry to our Open all assure me they'll be back. And as for Eileen, her list of major achievements just keeps growing, last years National LGU Medal winner, a double Lochend Champion and now a double Lochend Open winner is simply FANTASTIC !!
