The 2007 Lochend Ladies Open came along with high hopes of low scoring and maybe even a home win. The low scoring came in straight from the word go as Jaci Moriarty posted a 68 despite incurring a penalty for playing the wrong ball but Jaci did end up with the 1st Silver Handicap.
The home win was still looking a possibility as Thelma Dey's 66 lead the way for some time. In the end Thelma finished one-stroke behind the eventual Open winner but was still a very popular Best Lochend Lady winner, a just reward for all the support she has given to the Ladies Open over the years. It's true we didn't exactly sweep the board this year but there were another couple of Lochenders who shone on the day. Violet Paterson took the 1st Bronze Scratch with a 94 and Helen Borthwick managed to squeeze into the prizes with a 71.
And so to the visitors. High expectations didn't last long for Newbattle's Jean Powell and Liese Collins who n/r'd at the first hole after both playing the wrong ball, and spare a thought for Royal Musselburgh's Linda Gray who ran up a 10 but still managed to card a 67 for the 1st Bronze handicap.
Craigmillar Park duo Frances McFadzean and Kay Baillie
both had a successful day as Frances was 2nd Silver Scratch (79) and hit the longest drive at the 11th while Kay's 71 was the 2nd Silver Handicap and they also took a sweep prize too.
Best Scratch score of the day belonged to Musselburgh old Course member Ruth Carol who scored an excellent 74 and was so close to matching the winning net score. In fact the competition was so close that 5 players were within 2 strokes of the eventual winner.
That honour goes to Liberton's Susan Walker who is the 2007 Open winner with an excellent 65, her nearest the pin in two at the 8th sent her well on the way to the big prize. Susan was absolutely delighted to win and proudly received the trophy, thanking Lochend for a well run day and promises she will be back next year.
Susan lead a very successful Liberton contingent as Gill Fisher, Jean Short, Pat Stables, Ann White and Angela Edwards were all in the prizes and from a personal point of view I was happy that so many of my colleagues from work have been successful. They all commented on the very friendly welcome they always receive from Lochend and applauded the decision to donate the unclaimed two's sweep prize-fund to the Maggies Cancer Care Centre.
As no-one hit the 17th green, the prize (Pink Holdall) will be played for at a future club competition (such as the Lady Captain's Day).
And that's it for another year, a Lochend Ladies Open made successful by the hard work of all the committee and the welcoming nature of our members, well done to you all from a very grateful Captain |
