GORDON SUTHERLAND - 2010 MATCHPLAY WINNER

The gents Singles Matchplay is always a popular Lochend competition and 2010 proved to be no different with 72 members attempting to win their way through the knock-out rounds in the hope of winning the Alan Devlin Trophy.
And Gordon Sutherland will be the latest name on that trophy.
In the final he may have been considered the underdog up against Robert Kay, (the current B Section Champion who was fresh from winning the latest monthly Medal) and it did look like going to form as Robert took the early 1 up lead at the 3rd, Gordon turned it around to be 1 up on the 6th. It was all square at the turn but a run of wins meant Gordon found himself 3 up by the 13th. A brilliant birdie 3 from Robert on the 14th reduced the gap to 2 then he produced further pressure by hitting the 15th green with his tee-shot however Gordon was up to the task and went even better by sinking his birdie putt to go back to 3-up and only needing to half the 16th which he did for a fine 3 and 2 win.
Managed to catch-up with the new Matchplay Champion for a sneak preview of the Edinburgh Castle replica trophy that will officially be presented at the Gents Dinner in March.
